When Dwayne Boyes first began exploring how artificial intelligence could improve healthcare, his vision was to empower patients and equip doctors.
“We’ve got frontline clinicians burning out, systems buckling, and patients waiting days or weeks for care that could be delivered in minutes,” Boyes says. “That’s not a human failure. That’s a system failure and it’s why we started to build Dr Sophia AI.”
Boyes is leading a bold new chapter in digital medicine. Dr Sophia AI is a clinically benchmarked, Software-as-a-Medical-Device (SaMD) designed to provide round-the-clock medical capability. It diagnoses, prescribes and advises on preventive care, under the auspices of a medical practice where human doctors can audit a chosen percentage of cases.
“It’s a doctor that never sleeps,” he says. “Not to replace humans, but to give every clinician a partner and every patient a safety net.”
From defence discipline to digital medicine
A former Air Force officer who has served in Afghanistan and the Korean DMZ, Boyes brings a structured, mission-driven mindset to innovation. His work grew out of a frustration with inefficiency across health systems — not just in Australia, but globally.
“Every day, doctors are expected to juggle patient care, documentation, compliance, and constant new guidance. It’s unsustainable,” Boyes explains. “I wanted to build something that could absorb that cognitive load — something that could think, act, and learn alongside humans.”
Dr Sophia AI integrates seamlessly with existing health infrastructure via FHIR-compliant protocols. It analyses a patient’s lifetime medical history alongside data from smartwatches, wearables and remote monitoring devices, to make evidence-based decisions, creating what Boyes calls “the first truly preventative doctor.”
And it’s fluent in countless languages, including Indigenous ones, meaning it can communicate easily with a wide range of patients and clinicians.

Dr Sophia AI achieved 96% accuracy, outperforming early-generation systems (and arguably outperforming human clinicians too!).
“We’re going carefully,” says Boyes. “We’re testing, validating and refining because, for us, it’s about earning trust, not hype.”
The system’s design aligns with the regulatory standards of international health authorities, including Australia’s TGA, the FDA, and European CE-Mark frameworks.
The road to authorisation
For all its sophistication, Dr Sophia AI faces the same hurdle as every medical innovation: regulation.
While the U.S. Congress recently proposed the Healthy Technology Act of 2025, which could allow AI to qualify as a “licensed practitioner”, Boyes is intent on following best practice to prove its worth.
“Autonomous prescribing sounds exciting until you realise how high the stakes are,” he says. “That’s why our focus now is an eight- to nine-figure clinical trial. It’s about proving, under the highest scrutiny, that Dr Sophia AI can safely operate within regulated systems.”
He’s currently in discussions with global investors and government stakeholders across Australia, Europe, and the Middle East.
In Boyes’ view, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and neighbouring GCC states are uniquely positioned to pioneer the adoption of Dr Sophia AI. “These nations have built the digital foundations most of the world is still dreaming about,” Boyes says. “Their cloud infrastructure, national health records, and appetite for innovation mean they can move confidently towards a truly intelligent, preventative health system.”
Western systems face different pressures. “We’re already spending about 10% of GDP on healthcare,” says Boyes, “But the demand is relentless with rising rates of chronic disease, an ageing population, ambulance ramping and workforce shortages. It’s time to look at how we can deliver care differently, especially across a vast country like Australia.”
Dr Sophia AI’s multi-model approach allows it to adapt to both realities. It can serve as a frontline innovation partner in the Gulf, while offering efficiency and relief to overstretched healthcare systems in Australia, Europe, and beyond.
Redefining what AI in healthcare means
For Boyes, AI is not a replacement for clinical judgment but rather an extension of it.
“The narrative has to change,” he insists. “Technology isn’t taking jobs. It’s giving humans back the time to do what only humans can — empathy, examination, connection.”
Dr Sophia AI, for example, may take care of patients who are dealing with acute infections, seeking to optimise their health or in need of an after-hours appointment. Meanwhile, human doctors gain more time to spend with patients who are navigating complex conditions or domestic violence.
Doctors remain firmly in the loop. Dr Sophia AI operates under a governing clinical body, with continuous auditing to maintain accountability. “It’s not a black box,” Boyes adds. “It’s a transparent, measurable partner. Doctors can login each morning and review what Dr Sophia AI did overnight and they can audit a chosen percentage of cases to check they agree with the advice given.”
He believes this approach is what will ultimately differentiate Dr Sophia AI from the wave of chat-based tools flooding the market. “We’re not building a chatbot,” he says. “We’re building a doctor — one that’s globally scalable, locally governed, and ethically grounded.”
A vision for global preventative care
Dr Sophia AI represents a paradigm shift in healthcare delivery. With operating costs projected at under $1 per consult, the platform could provide universal access to medical expertise without displacing human clinicians.
“It’s about health equity,” Boyes says. “Imagine a world where every person, no matter their postcode, language, or income, has access to accurate, evidence-based care, 24 hours a day. That’s the future we’re building.”

As he prepares for a global investment round, Boyes remains grounded in his philosophy: credibility before commercialisation.
“Being first to market is one thing but earning the world’s trust is what matters most,” comments Boyes. “That’s how we’ll make Dr Sophia AI the doctor the world deserves.”
