Metro North Health has announced the appointment of Mr Nick Steele as its new Chief Executive, marking a significant leadership transition for Queensland’s largest Hospital and Health Service.
The appointment follows a comprehensive national and international recruitment process and was confirmed by the Metro North Health Board this week.
Board confirms confidence in leadership
Metro North Health Board Chair Bernard Curran said the appointment reflected the Board’s confidence in Mr Steele’s leadership, oversight and experience within the health sector.
“Mr Steele brings the judgement and experience needed to lead a large and complex health service, strengthen performance, and support a system that is resilient, connected and responsive to community need,” Mr Curran said.
“Across his career in Queensland and the United Kingdom, Mr Steele has consistently focused on service delivery, performance and meaningful engagement with staff and clinicians, always with patient care at the forefront of his decision making.
“On behalf of the Board, I welcome Mr Steele and look forward to working with him as he leads Metro North through its next phase.”
Metro North Health delivers public hospital and community-based services to more than one million people across Brisbane’s north, inner west and surrounding regions. The service oversees some of Queensland’s busiest hospitals and specialised clinical services, making it a critical component of the state’s health system.
Chief Executive outlines priorities
Mr Steele said he was grateful to staff and the Board for the trust placed in him and acknowledged the privilege and responsibility of leading Metro North Health.
“It is an honour to continue serving as Chief Executive of Metro North Health and to contribute to services that are so vital to our community,” Mr Steele said.
“Since joining Metro North, I have seen first-hand the professionalism, commitment and care our people bring every day for patients and communities, and the real difference this makes.
“My focus remains on delivering safe, high-quality and equitable care, supporting our workforce, and continuing the work already underway to strengthen performance, culture and the way we work together.”
Experience across public health systems
Mr Steele brings more than two decades of experience across public health systems in Australia and the United Kingdom. His career includes senior leadership roles within Queensland Health, including positions focused on system performance and clinical support at a statewide level.
The appointment comes at a time of sustained pressure across Australia’s public hospital system, as services respond to rising demand, workforce constraints and increasing expectations around quality, performance and long-term sustainability.
