As part of The Marketing Prescription series with Splice Marketing, our recent article The New Era in Search explored how Google’s AI updates are transforming SEO. This next instalment looks at why it is still essential to be seen as a subject matter expert online and how that recognition directly impacts visibility, authority and patient trust.

When Google introduced AI Overviews and AI Mode, it also redefined what quality content looks like. Its goal is to highlight credible, accurate and expert sources that deliver value. For healthcare businesses, this shift reinforces the importance of demonstrating real expertise and authenticity in every piece of content.

Belinda Roberts, SEO and Projects Manager at Splice Marketing, explains that this evolution is actually an opportunity for healthcare organisations.

“Google’s AI rewards content that demonstrates experience and authority,” she says. “When healthcare businesses share genuine expertise and transparency, they naturally align with what Google values most.”

How Google measures expertise

To separate credible content from generic information, Google uses a framework known as N-E-E-A-T-T, which measures Notability, Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness and Transparency.

“N-E-E-A-T-T gives us a roadmap for what Google values most,” Roberts says. “For healthcare, that means showing real-world experience, evidence-based insights and transparent communication.”

Here is how each element applies in practice:

  • Notability: Is your business recognised as credible in its field? Mentions in media, journals or directories all help.
  • Experience: Does your content demonstrate hands-on clinical knowledge rather than generic summaries?
  • Expertise: Are articles written or reviewed by qualified healthcare professionals?
  • Authoritativeness: Do other reputable websites link to or reference your content?
  • Trustworthiness: Is the information factual, honest and compliant with healthcare advertising regulations?
  • Transparency: Does your site clearly show who wrote or reviewed the content and where the information came from?

“When Google’s AI Mode scans and compiles responses, it prioritises sources that demonstrate these qualities,” Roberts says. “That means healthcare businesses with credible, well-structured content are far more likely to be featured.”

Consistency builds credibility

Publishing regular, educational content is one of the most effective ways to strengthen your online authority. It signals to both Google and patients that your business is active, informed and engaged.

“Consistency is key, but quality is non-negotiable,” Roberts says. “Educational, non-promotional content performs best in healthcare because it genuinely helps people. When patients trust your information, they are more likely to trust your services.”

Splice Marketing recommends healthcare organisations aim to publish at least one valuable, research-based article per month. Focus on topics that answer patient questions, clarify complex conditions or share professional insights.

This steady, purposeful approach helps your website stay relevant to both search engines and patient audiences.

Content and SEO work together

High-quality content and strong technical SEO form the foundation of every successful healthcare website. Both elements need to work in harmony to drive visibility, credibility and patient conversion.

“At Splice Marketing, we ensure our healthcare clients capture intent-driven traffic by optimising for both content and technical SEO,” Roberts explains. “When those elements align, you not only attract the right audience but also build lasting authority with Google.”

As AI continues to reshape how information is found and trusted online, healthcare businesses that demonstrate expertise and authenticity will be the ones who stand out.
